Who is Philip Athans? The New York Times best-promoting writer Philip Athans started writing stories the second he turned literate, and an early love of films and TV sent him to film school. He continued to write in faculty and even performed in a punk rock band before he discovered that being a great author and being a great musician don’t necessarily go hand in hand. His degree in Cinema & Photography landed him in a string of music retail positions the place he labored long hours for low pay, but obtained lots of free CDs and tickets to concerts, and met some interesting individuals. But that was only the start of a career that has spanned all three levels of the entertainment industry: promoting different individuals’s work, helping refine and develop other folks’s work, and placing work of his own out there. Before he even offered a brief story, he began publishing his personal journal: Alternative Fiction & Poetry, which in its quick, five-issue life span went from complete obscurity to semi-o bscurity. Still, there’s never been a greater crash course in operating a creative enterprise than simply diving in and doing it yourself. While nonetheless selling records he got down to flip a hobby (role-playing games) right into a career. A number of freelance assignments ended up getting him his first paying job in publishing. He sent a proposal for a contract project to TSR, Inc. (the creators of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ®) and the vice chairman of the video games division was so impressed by the proposal and his resume that he passed it on to the manager editor of the publishing division, who was on the lookout for a brand new editor. Phil apparently said the proper things within the interview and in 1995 he turned the most recent editor for TSR Books, one of many premiere publishers of fantasy fiction on the earth. His modifying job moved to Seattle two years later when TSR merged with Wizards of the Coast, and Phil moved with it, finding a brand new residence and a string of su ccesses in the Pacific Northwest. The neatest thing about that job is the extreme, hands-on improvement of complex mental properties that goes means beyond conventional genre publishing. His abilities in that regard are exemplified within the great leaps forward that the FORGOTTEN REALMS ® novel line has made beneath his care. Phil has been working with established authors like R.A. Salvatore (whose FORGOTTEN REALMS novels, The Two Swords and The Pirate King, broke the top 5 on the New York Times hardcover fiction best seller list), however he’s also had the enviable alternative of discovering new talent and beginning some excellent younger authors on successful careers. This collaborative body of labor has satisfied the authors, firm, and viewers alike and introduced the line to new heights. Though he wrote his first novel in 1985, he printed his first, Baldur’s Gate, in 1998 and has gone on to publish eight extra: Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, In Fluid Silence as G.W. Ti rpa, The Savage Caves and The Death Ray as T.H. Lain, Annihilation, which obtained him his own place on the coveted New York Times finest sellers record in the summertime of 2004, and The Watercourse Trilogy (Whisper of Waves, Lies of Light, and Scream of Stone), and 2008’s A Reader’s Guide to R.A. Salvatore’s The Legend of Drizzt, a detailed, illustrated guide to the FORGOTTEN REALMS line’s finest-promoting sequence When Wizards of the Coast grew to become a part of Hasbro, new opportunities opened up, together with the chance to work with some great people in the development of Centipede: an animated sequence for television with Dan Clark, Hasbro’s Fantasy Factory, and Cartoon Network.
